Participating Health Professions
Providing Resources
During this program, students are familiarized with the offered health professions at UBC —such as Dentistry, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, and Physical Therapy— and receive information about the admission process, scholarships, funding, and more.
Past participants expressed that they benefited from this information, as it increased their awareness of possible programs and helped them to identify their educational and professional interests.
Mentorship and Connection
The program aims to facilitate mentorship and create connections for students through activities like meeting practitioners and students from various health professions through panel discussions and visiting clinical, teaching and research sites across campus.
Activities are intentionally designed to be inclusive, accessible, and engaging. When reflecting on their experience with the program, past participants noted the benefits of these opportunities.
Facilitating Discussions
One key objective of this program is to provide opportunities and support for EDGs by encouraging discussions related to experiences within health professions.
Testimonials
The program activities were great and gave us a good idea about the professions. The panels and sharing of past experiences was my favourite part as we learned that everyone has a unique pathway to their career and what drives them in their profession. This was so valuable as it’s information that you can’t easily find elsewhere.
I learned many things from [the health professional and student panels] and I’m less hesitant now to apply to certain programs!
“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to participate in this program and it has been so inspiring and encouraging. It has helped me to recognize my abilities and my capacity to grow.
The sit downs to talk with the admissions advisors, career advisors and current students [were beneficial] as before this program I had no idea what to do in university or how to apply. [B]ut after talking to people who have already been through the experience, I am much more confident.
I found the facilitators to be thoughtful and mindful when we were doing skills-based activities. I also appreciate the organizers for taking the time to reflect with us and having an impactful discussion of cultural humility and accountability.
I loved the camp, and it went beyond my expectations mostly because of how organized it was. I like the fact that it was relevant to what we would want to know despite all of us being at different grades/levels of education.
